i am not sure about the accuracy of any of these pages.  i need help with details and authentication. 
The Lamborghini V12 dual distributor. author - docmirror
This is a Marelli dizzy used on several V12s from Ferrari and Lamborghini. First, why is there two (dual) circuits? Why not just make one cirucit for all 12 cylinders? The answer is in the
limitations of the coils and condensors available at the time of design. At some RPM, the number of sparks per second exceeds the coils ability to discharge and recharge for the next fire. This is called saturation. It's not an issue on 4, 6, or even 8 Cylinders up to about 7500 RPM, but 4 firings every rev at 7500 RPM begins to reach the limit of the condenser to collect a sufficient charge to energise the coil. 6 firings (four sroke V12) at that RPM would exceed the coils capacity to discharge and recover.
    There are two independent electrical circuits within any dizzy, the low tension, or primary circuit, and the high tension, or spark circuit. In our dizzy this is duplicated for each bank of cylinders, giving four total circuits within the same housing. Since the two cylinder banks are identical electrically, I will only describe one circuit in total.
    The low tension circuit is comprised of the points, and the condenser, served voltage by a 12V source and in our case reduced to about 9.5V by the ballast resistor and then through the low tension circuit of the coil. This DC voltage sits on the primary wiring of the coil, and is fed out to the dizzy on a single wire.
    A major source of confusion in the dual dizzy of these cars is the 4 sets of points. Some think that these points operate independently, at varying firing times, others think that one set is a spare. Neither of these is correct. The reason for four sets of points is that two of the points work together to prolong the condenser charge at high RPM. This will provide a hot spark, even when the dwell time is quite short, during high rotational speeds.
    If you look at the point sets, you will notice that the two opposing points are connected together at the housing through-fitting and then connected to the condenser on the outside of the dizzy. The two opposing points work together to make a longer dwell angle. The longer dwell angle is useful at high RPM to fully charge the condenser and sending a good strong jolt to the coil primary. Why didn't they just make the lobe of the dizzy cam higher? Well, then we suffer from the mechanical problem of excess contact wear, and point bounce or float. So, with two sets, we can keep the lobe height to a minimum while extending the dwell angle to charge the condenser. So for each bank of cylinders we have two point sets, for a total of four. This 'dual point' has been used on high perfomance cars since the pre-war times.  Modern cars use an elecronic delay circuit to achieve the same result.
    Inside the dizzy, each point set is mounted on its own small plate. The plates are held to the advance disk by two screws at the side of the plates. These screws determine the dwell angle and should not be moved, unless a Distributor Calibration machine is available. Even with that, it would be hard to know the exact setting of the degree difference to set them at. The points are held to the plate by  one screw in a slot, and a circlip on top of the point arm shaft. The circlip has a Phenolic washer under it, and then the points.

* Note - early Miura (maybe first 400 or so) pedal pivots are plastic. When replacing those plastic pedal bushings with these metal split bushings, a .002"-.005" shim wrap, on the outside of the new bushing, will be normally required for tightest fit in the pedal and on the shaft.
